St. Josephs Healthcare

The West 5th Campus is a new hospital that will support larger, state of the art facilities for people and families struggling with mental illness and addiction. Construction began in the spring of 2011 and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2014. The increase in capacity will be up to 305 beds and an expanded outpatient clinic.

The outdoor spaces are designed to provide a variety of landscapes specific to individuals suffering a severe mental illness. Gardens respond to programs in the area of schizophrenia, mood disorders, forensic and geriatric psychiatry.

Located in Hamilton, the property’s adjacency to the Niagara Escarpment and Mohawk College is reflected in the Master Plan. Venues for neighbourhood and community integration include pathways, sports fields and a pastoral landscape.

The fifty acre site sits atop the environmentally sensitive Niagara Escarpment. Preservation of the existing natural landscape, including mature groves of trees, was key to the overall design. Outdoor areas for therapeutic and recreational use are connected through trails and continuous walking loops.

The Royal Victoria Hospital serves the City of Barrie as well as a large surrounding geographical area. The 299 bed facility is comprised of Complex Continuing Care, Mental Health, Critical Care, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Rehabilitation, General Medicine and Surgical Units.

The Landscape Master Plan construction incorporates the development of the grounds for the expansion of the hospital as well as the existing site. This will add 69 beds to the hospital and the new Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre.

The campus plan integrates and improves the existing grounds through a comprehensive streetscape plan and a series of garden destinations. Pedestrian circulation is improved through clear wayfinding cues together with a variety of places to sit along routes. Entrances are enhanced

The North Garden is the major public open space and destination. It creates an entrance to Gilda's Lodge and the Cancer Care Centre. A place to sit, walk through and to go to on meal breaks.

The East Streetscape can be closed at the Urban Plaza for special events and utilized as a fundraising venue for large public gatherings. The Plaza is the main drop off for the Cancer Care Centre.

Alongside the Centre is the East Garden. A series of meditative nooks are located along a winding walk surrounded by grasses, wildflowers and trees.

Multiple levels of Green Roof gardens will form one of the largest of its kind in Canada. The planting creates views from patient care windows, is part of the Storm Water Management plan and is designed for low maintenance.

North Bay Regional Health Centre

The former North Bay Psychiatric Hospital and the North Bay General Hospital will be amalgamated into the new North Bay Regional Health Centre. The new facility will be within one building on a new 300 acre site. The two facilities, namely the North Bay General Hospital and the Northeast Mental Health Centre, will share the site and some of the amenity areas.

A cafeteria wing with adjacent exterior gardens is the central meeting point between the two facilities.

The Northeast Mental Health Centre will provide inpatient, outpatient, emergency, consultive and educational services for the entire northeast region of the province.

Amenity spaces adjacent to the building and overall site reflect the unique needs of the patient groups from this region. The utilization of the outdoors as an integral part of therapy is an important component of the programme criteria.

Opportunities for recreation therapy, physical and occupational therapy together with sports, gardening, barbecues and places for both quiet respite and visiting are addressed.

The Master Plan development of the grounds sought to prepare a long range development plan for a cohesive health care community.

Phase One will allow for some immediate landscape construction ready for the projected opening day. Fundraising to finish grounds development is anticipated for the remaining construction within a five year period from that date.
