The West 5th Campus is a new hospital that will support larger, state of the art facilities for people and families struggling with mental illness and addiction. Construction began in the spring of 2011 and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2014. The increase in capacity will be up to 305 beds and an expanded outpatient clinic.
The outdoor spaces are designed to provide a variety of landscapes specific to individuals suffering a severe mental illness. Gardens respond to programs in the area of schizophrenia, mood disorders, forensic and geriatric psychiatry.
Located in Hamilton, the property’s adjacency to the Niagara Escarpment and Mohawk College is reflected in the Master Plan. Venues for neighbourhood and community integration include pathways, sports fields and a pastoral landscape.
The fifty acre site sits atop the environmentally sensitive Niagara Escarpment. Preservation of the existing natural landscape, including mature groves of trees, was key to the overall design. Outdoor areas for therapeutic and recreational use are connected through trails and continuous walking loops.
